What is an equine surgeon?

An Equine surgeon is a veterinarian who has sought out advanced training beyond their time at vet school. This is usually in the form of a 1 year internship followed by a 3 year residency that focuses on surgery and lameness. The residency requires that a certain case load is met which includes requirements for each type of case. This extra education and experience in the field of surgery and lameness prepares the veterinary surgeon to deal with complex cases as well as any complications that may arise post-operatively.

Dr. Catherine Radtke, our experienced surgeon, is proud to offer a range of surgical procedures that were not previously available in the central Pennsylvania Area.

    Lameness

Dr. Radtke's education and training has also allowed her to specialize in lameness and sports medicine. From simple cases to complicated and comprehensive lameness evaluations, Dr. Radtke will find the right solution for you and your horse.

The term "lameness" is used to describe a change in the horse's natural gait, usually due to pain. Veterinarians preform lameness exams in order to help locate the source of the pain in order to determine the appropriate treatment or therapy for the horse.

Dr. Radtke is well versed in many innovative lameness treatments and therapies for horses of all types, and works hard to keep your horse preforming at it's maxiumum potential. Additionally, she can make surgical recommendations based off the evaluation of radiographs, tendon ultrasounds, and abdominal ultrasounds.
